Other Ways to Donate
Donations of many types and kinds are greatly appreciated and needed.
Every dollar donated to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) brings us closer to finding a cure for Huntington's Disease and allows us to provide services and support to HD families. Because we receive no federal funding, we depend on YOU for continued support of HDSA's many programs and services. 87% of each unrestricted gift to HDSA will be used to support HDSA's research, education and family services. Donors also have the right to restrict their gifts for a specific program or programmatic area. When this is done, 100% of the restricted donation is used for that program. All cash contributions are deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Check with your tax professional for assistance. The HDSA is a 501 C-3 Charity. In all cases, it is advisable that you consult your own financial planner, tax or legal advisor when making a substantial gift.

Tributes and Memorials
Making a donation to HDSA in honor of a friend or relative is a wonderful way to show someone special how much they mean to you while also helping us in our battle against HD.
When you make a gift to HDSA in memory of a lost loved one, you help ensure a brighter future for those that are still battling HD.
Memorial Envelopes are a tasteful way of honoring a deceased relative or friend and at the same time contributing to the struggle against HD.
Matching Gifts
Join with the corporation you are working for to double your gift to HDSA by participating in its matching gifts program. Many employers have matching gifts programs that match their employees' tax-deductible contributions. This means that HDSA will get double your initial donation. Simply Obtain a Matching Gift Form from your Human Resources department and enclose it with your gift to HDSA.
Family Funds
The dramatic acceleration in the pace of HD research, education and support services has not occurred by chance. The phenomenal growth in these programs over the last three years can be directly traced to the support of our HD families. As a part of their commitment to care and cure, many families have chosen to fight back in the battle against Huntington's Disease by establishing a Family Fund to support a specific program or project.
When a family creates a Family Fund, they are taking a proactive stand in their fight against HD. They know that 100% of their contributions are used to support their chosen HDSA program. If a family chooses to support a scientist investigating new treatments for the disease, they know that every dollar they give to HDSA will be used to support that scientist's project to find the answers to HD. If a family elects to support an education program, they know that every dollar they contribute will be used to inform people about the disease. If a family decides to invest in family services, they know that every dollar will be used to underwrite support for people struggling with HD today.
Russ Becker and his three sons established the first HDSA Family fund after their wife and mother, Helen, lost her battle with HD. "We established the Helen Becker Memorial Research Fund as a way to perpetuate Helen's memory and further the work being done in the laboratory," said Russ Becker. "My sons and I wanted to do something so that other families would not suffer a similar fate. "Families who support Family Funds have the satisfaction of knowing that not only is their entire gift supporting their chosen project, they know that their project is making a significant difference in the fight against HD. Through reports from scientists and project leaders the Family fund supports, families know just how effective their gift has been. Families can choose to make an annual commitment to projects in Research, Education, Family Services or any combination of the three.
Life Insurance
The fight against Huntington's Disease is an ongoing one that will not only need to be fought today, but for many years to come. In fact, it won't be over until we find a cure. A gift of Life Insurance can often be the easiest type of planned gift to make. Most people have insurance policies and many have outlived their original purpose. By contributing your policy to HDSA Texas, you are entitled to a tax deduction for the policy's full cash value. You can transfer ownership of a policy to HDSA Texas or simply name HDSA Texas as a primary or secondary beneficiary of the policy. Help us find a cure in your memory.
Stock and Securities
If you own stocks or mutual fund shares that have increased in value, this may be a great time to consider making a gift to HDSA Texas. When you make a gift of stocks or securities you not only earn a charitable tax deduction for the full fair market value of the gift, but you also avoid capital gains taxes.
Personal Property
Every donation to HDSA Texas brings us closer to finding a cure for Huntington's Disease and allows us to provide services and support to HD families. Donations of any kind and sort are accepted and are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Donate automobiles, jewelry, furniture, and just about anything else of value. In addition, don't forget us in your will.
Wills and Bequests
Remembering HDSA Texas in your will can be a valuable way to help ensure HDSA"s financial security well into the future, while possibly also saving on estate taxes. A bequest to the Huntington's Disease Society of America is fully deductible for estate tax purposes, and may place your estate into a lower estate tax bracket. You may bequest cash, property or appreciated securities. While an unrestricted gift is very appreciated because HDSA may use the funds to support the programs deemed most urgent at the time, you always have the right to specify how your gift will be used. If you do plan to make a restricted gift, you should contact HDSA Texas to be certain that the organization can meet the conditions specified in your will.
Suggested wording for Specific Bequest: "leave [dollar amount] to the Huntington's Disease Society of America, Texas Affiliate, a non-profit corporation, or its successor, to be used for general purposes of the organization."
Suggested wording for a Residual Bequest: "All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, real and personal, give, devise and bequeath to the Huntington's Disease Society of America, a non-profit corporation, or its successor, to be used for general purposes of the organization.
Trusts
Charitable Remainder Trusts:
A charitable remainder trust is a legal agreement under which a donor funds a trust that provides income to the beneficiaries for life, or a term of years, after which the remainder of the trust is distributed to HDSA and/or to other charitable organizations. This type of trust allows you to lower your taxes by pledging some of your assets to HDSA, while at the same time allowing you to receive yearly income payments. For the donor who owns highly appreciated, non-income or low income producing assets, the cost of converting those assets into income is usually a capital gains tax on the appreciation. by transferring the asset to a charitable remainder trust, the donor creates a tax-free environment in which to sell the appreciated asset. this enables the trustee to reinvest the entire proceeds to produce a greater income stream. There are a few different types of trusts that may be established with HDSA as a beneficiary.
Charitable Remainder Unitrust:
This is the most common kind of charitable remainder trust. After setting up the trust, the donor receives an annual lifetime income and upon the donors death the charity receives the rest. In this type of trust the donor usually retains a right to a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets, valued annually. If the value of the assets increases, so does the annual return and vice versa.
Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust:
This trust is similar to the unitrust but instead pays a fixed dollar annuity year after year. The increased or decreases in the value of the trust do not affect the payments.
Charitable Lead Trusts:
A charitable lead trust is the opposite of a charitable remainder trust, and is an excellent method of supporting HDSA while you are still alive. When you establish a charitable lead trust, HDSA receives income for a set number of years, and at the end of that time period your heirs inherit the assets.
